VOCAL CO-OP Training Institute

Renewal, reconnection, and peer learning

 

October 20-23, 2008

A four-day training institute in grassroots mental health program leadership and nonprofit management skills. Held at the beautiful Seven Oaks Retreat Center. We look forward to coming together for a time of renewal, reconnection, and peer learning.

A close and intensive event, space will be limited to 45 people. We will have scholarships available for leaders of VOCAL CO-OP member programs, and paid registration available for others who would like to join us.

Firewalkers Workshop 

May, 2008

Firewalkers is a new project at VOCAL that explores the theme of mental illness as a process of spiritual transformation, personal quest, and deep inner journey. Join us for an interactive workshop with listening, talking, sharing, and a short writing exercise to explore this theme in our lives. Led by the Firewalkers team, this workshop was held at the VOCAL Network Conference.

 

Coming Out VOCAL  

May, 2008  

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender & Friends. A welcoming, safe space for anyone who wants to connect with other gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender people and friends and supporters.  This workshop is open to anyone who believes in gay rights and supports LGBT people. Join us for an informal, friendly gathering including some games and activities to get to know each other and some time to talk and share about our experiences with LGBT issues and the mental health system. Led by Cassandra Nudel, this workshop was held at the VOCAL Network Conference.

 

 

VOCAL & Recovery 

June, 2007

Find out how VOCAL is contributing to recovery, consumer advocacy, and system change. Learn about the consumer movement in your community and nationwide. Participate in an experiential recovery exercise. Led by Ann Benner, John Otenasek, Brian Parrish, and Byron Stith. Held at the DMHMRSAS Conference, Foundations of Recovery in Richmond.

 

Legislative Forum 

June, 2007

Group discussion of Virginia's legislative process and current legislative climate, and developing priorities for the 2008 legislative session. Led by Ray Bridge, Brian Parrish & Byron Stith. Held at the VOCAL Network Conference.

Safe Space for Exploring Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual Transgender Issues at VOCAL

Do you think VOCAL is a safe and welcoming organization for people who are gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender? Is this an issue you care about? Everyone is welcome – gay, straight, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, and everything in between. VOCAL CO-OP Gathering

Peer Program Gathering

March, 2006

The VOCAL CO-OP Gathering is a day of peer-led workshops, trainings, discussion circles, planning teams, & creative activities. Free & open to all board members, staff members & volunteers of peer-run mental health groups in Virginia (newly-forming groups welcome!). We ran this gathering for the first time in 2006, and hope to do it again in future year. Designed & Led by Cassandra Nudel. Highlights from our first year include:

  • 8 peer-led workshops & discussion circles

  • Book Launch for Grant Seeker’s Treasure Map & Orienteering Guide

  • Nonprofit Library - Programs selected free books from a nonprofit library

  • CO-OP Directory Launch - 6 groups signed up to be in the directory

  • Scholarships - 21 people received free training, food & transportation, thanks to support from Virginia DMHMRSAS.

 

Art of Leadership

Four Day Leadership Retreat

2005

A week of community, creativity, and skill-building for leaders of peer programs in Virginia. Open to everyone involved in starting or running a peer-run mental health program. Newly-forming groups welcome! Full scholarships available. The retreat was held at a beautiful rural retreat center in central Virginia. This retreat was planned to be creative, interactive, and participant-directed. Here’s a few highlights from 2005:
 

  • 7 hands-on training workshops: including leadership styles, organizational development, team building, sustainability, communication skills, and more

  • 11 peer-led workshops, planning teams & discussion circles

  • Nonprofit Library - Book Signing Party & free books on grassroots leadership, fundraising, grant writing, board development, financial leadership, and more

  • Special guest trainer George Lakey, Executive Director of Training for Change & author of Grassroots and Nonprofit Leadership

  • Scholarships - 18 people received free training, lodging, food, and transportation, thanks to support from Virginia DMHMRSAS

The Art of Grantmaking

An Intensive Grant Writing Laboratory

2002

The Art of Grantmaking is a free 5-day workshop for mental health consumers and consumer-run programs. We welcome people from all backgrounds and levels of experience to join us. In this collaborative workshop, we will work together as partners and classmates to develop projects, write grant proposals, and learn how to negotiate with funders. Over a period of four months, we will all work together to complete grant proposals for consumer-run programs. Using buddies and teamwork, everyone will help motivate and support each other through the grant writing process -- sharing ideas, experiences, and knowledge. We hope to make this program accessible, fun, and creative, while working together with seriousness of purpose and a strong commitment to meeting our goals. Designed & Led by Brian Parrish, plus training materials by Cassandra Nudel.  Guest Presenters:
